Spooks – James P. Slusser

Spooks by James P. Slusser is strong military fiction, set in the Vietnam War, but it is driven by a romantic tie between the two main characters. It is quite humorous the whole way through the book, I almost died a few times laughing…

The Spooks are a military special forces group. They are referred to as Spooks because they strike so efficiently and deadly you never see them (though at one point they do mess up). And very little to no information is kept on or about them, so in the chance of one member being revealed, they can not be linked back to the US government.

One member of the Spooks deployed in Vietnam forms an interest for a combat nurse on base. At first, he is enjoying creeping her out, and she grows a dislike for him. Without much face-to-face contact, he leaves gifts in her room without her ever being able to detect him (one of which was leaving a wine bottle under her billow) and protects her against harms. It isn’t until the end of the book that they actually get together. The author tricks you, but it does end well, believe me.

Not all readers will enjoy the humor or relations in the book, but it is a good read that keeps your attention.
