The Twilight Saga – Stephenie Meyer

Yes, yes, I know… I got suckered into Twilight…

But hey, it was worth it.

I was bored going into my freshman year at college because I hadn’t landed a job at the college yet. So I went vest shopping because I only own one. What reason more do I need? Well, I got sidetracked when I saw the book section and thought, “Hey, I could read a book while I’m bored.” Lo and behold, I stumble onto the first book of Twilight. “Well, shit, I’ve heard some groans and sighs about this… I hear it’s a romance with vampires, why not? There’s always I first to everything.” (As if I really needed more romance stories in my head.)

Well, two weeks later and I’ve finished the four-book series… Even read Twilight Reimagined in the middle. The author got sick of people saying the gender roles in the book were cliché, so she remade the first book by swapping all the genders. Which, by the way, was an amazing stand-alone. In kind of a kinky way, to be honest. But it was more relatable since the human is a male, like me, so I could imagine myself in his place… dating a female vampire… yeah, let me stop there.

It was a very interesting book because it offered a lot of scenarios/situations and behavior to contemplate that I hadn’t ever thought about before. This was my first vampire book series, werewolves too, for that matter. A lot of it comes with how in-depth and personal you become with Bella’s life. But, don’t get me wrong, it was also the lovey duppy, “they must have a happy ending,” and I want to read how they get to it, that kept me up all night. I know it’s corny, but, it was heart-wrenching and captivating, and I got attached. It’s hard not to wish you could fall in love like that, and preferably, avoid some of those heartaches.

Later I found that there were two additional add-on books to the series, which I talked about in the post on my first reads of 2021, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner and Midnight Sun
