Ranger’s Apprentice – John Flanagan

Last week, someone told me they were going through the Ranger’s Apprentice and how much they were enjoying it, so I decided to give it a try and finished the first book last night. It was really good, it has that simple thrill of adventure, calling, and growing up. It is juvenile fiction and the reading is easy to follow, but the author uses many different words, which is nice. The plot development is very similar to classical medieval novels about children growing up, learning, and taking responsibility. The material has new ideas and situations, and even if the development and plot is not at all unique, it is a timeless story of adventure as one grows up that just doesn’t get old.

I’m definitely going to finish the series. Yesterday, had a bit of a scare on the plot. Book two that I picked up, wasn’t actually book 2 of the original series, but book 2 of the sub series called “A Royal Ranger.” Time jumped so far ahead, and the whole time I was debating if the author actually had the guts to do such a thing, and how annoying it was going to be to just get flash backs to catch us up, rather than reading through it from the start. But, that’s been solved, and I’m waiting for books 2 and 3 to be returned by another reader.

So far still really enjoying the series. This week I’ve started book 6, The Siege of Macindaw, and I have the next five books as well sitting on my shelf from the library.

Had a few pauses as I read through some other books and life happened. But got through books 8 and 9 now.

Waiting on book 10 to arrive at the library.
